Frequently Asked Questions

M-Tag is a small electronic sticker (like a smart chip) that is fitted on your vehicle’s windshield or number plate. The Punjab government has made it compulsory from March 2026 to improve security, stop vehicle theft, track stolen cars/bikes instantly, and control traffic violations. It works like an advanced toll tag but now covers every road in Punjab, not just motorways. This law was introduced after a high-level meeting to reduce crime and make roads safer for everyone. If you don’t install it, you can face heavy fines and even vehicle impounding.

The permit only allows motorcycles up to 125cc engine capacity and limited power electric bikes. This includes common motorcycles like 70cc, 100cc, and 125cc models. High-power motorcycles such as 150cc or 250cc bikes are not allowed under this permit. The restriction exists to reduce accident risks for young riders.

Almost every vehicle now needs an M-Tag. All cars, SUVs, vans, and private vehicles are 100% compulsory. Motorcycles and bikes (including 70cc to 125cc) also need it from June 2026. Rickshaws, Qingqi, tractors, trucks, buses, and commercial vehicles must install it too. Only emergency vehicles (ambulance, police, fire brigade) and some government cars are exempt. If your vehicle is registered in Punjab, you must get M-Tag before the deadline or you cannot drive legally.

One-time installation cost is Rs. 1,500 for cars and Rs. 1,000 for bikes. Annual renewal fee is Rs. 300 for cars and Rs. 200 for motorcycles. If you lose the tag, replacement costs Rs. 800. You can pay through PSID or at any authorized center. Many people are getting it early to avoid last-minute rush and extra charges. Always keep the receipt safe because it is proof of installation.

Yes, from 1st June 2026, every motorcycle and bike in Punjab must have an M-Tag. Earlier only cars needed it on motorways, but now the new law includes bikes too. Traffic police will start checking bikes at random checkposts. If you ride without M-Tag, you can get Rs. 5,000 fine and your bike may be seized. This rule is mainly for security because many stolen bikes are used in crimes.

Go to any authorized center (Excise office, Vehicle Registration Center or authorized workshops in Lahore, Faisalabad, Multan, Rawalpindi, etc.). Take your CNIC, vehicle registration book (Form 29/30), and bike/car key. They will scan your documents, install the tag in 10-15 minutes, and give you a receipt. You can also book online slot through the official Punjab Excise portal. The whole process is free of harassment and takes less than 30 minutes if you go early morning.

First time fine is Rs. 5,000 for cars and Rs. 3,000 for bikes. If caught again, fine goes up to Rs. 10,000 and your vehicle can be impounded for 7 days. Police are already installing cameras that automatically detect no M-Tag. Many drivers got surprised in March 2026 when they were stopped on GT Road. Always install it before May 2026 to stay safe and avoid unnecessary tension.

You cannot install M-Tag fully online yet, but you can book your slot and pay PSID online through the Punjab Excise website or e-Khidmat Markaz app. After payment, you just visit the center for 10-minute installation. This saves time and crowd. Many people in Lahore and Faisalabad are using this online slot system and getting their work done same day.

Yes, completely different. Old motorway tag only worked on motorways for toll payment. New M-Tag is province-wide and used for security tracking, crime control, and automatic challan system on all roads of Punjab. It has stronger GPS and works even when your vehicle is parked. You cannot use the old motorway tag for the new law – you must get the new M-Tag.

Open the Punjab Excise official website or download the “Punjab Vehicle Verification” app. Enter your vehicle number and CNIC. It will show instantly whether M-Tag is installed or not. You can also check at any Excise office or by sending your vehicle number to 8888 SMS service. Do this check before traveling long distances in 2026.

You need: Original CNIC, Original vehicle registration book (Smart Card or File), Latest token tax paid receipt, and one passport-size photo. For bikes, you also need the bike key. If the vehicle is in someone else’s name, you need a NOC or authorization letter. Keep photocopies ready. Centers reject incomplete documents, so double-check before going.
